Cobar is turning up the heat on Outback hospitality on 12-15 April as it hosts the inaugural Grey Mardi Gras. The 1950s, 60s and 70s are considered a golden era for music, food and fashion, shaped by prosperity and protest.
A four-day event, the Grey Mardi Gras celebrates the best of this time with live entertainment, colour, action and a whole lot of fun. With a packed program of dinner dancing, street parades, tributes, live entertainment and more, there’s no excuse to not put your glad rags on and join us for a retro long weekend of vintage classics.
Stomp, Jive & Bump Buffet Dinner Dance
Kicking off the Grey Mardi Gras is the Stomp, Jive & Bump Buffet Dinner Dance from 6-11pm (approx) on Friday 12 April at the Cobar Memorial Services Club. It’s a night to really test your love of the golden eras, with 1950s, 60s, and 70s fashion prizes up for grabs, golden era trivia, and a themed two-course buffet dinner.
Creating the vibe for the night is live entertainment performed by Royden Donohue and the Western All Stars. Three rounds of Trivia and a fashion competition. You can also take home a memento from the night with snaps from the photo booth.
Tickets are available online or through the Cobar Visitor Information Centre: Adults $60; Concession $55 – drinks not included. Ticket sales close Monday April 8 at 6am for catering purposes.
Cobar Grey Mardi Gras Street Parade
Who doesn’t love a street parade?! Starting at 11am on Saturday, a procession of fashion, dancers, cars, motorbikes, retro caravans, and more will parade through the heart of Cobar in celebration of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The parade will depart from the corner of Lewis and Marshall street, heading west along Marshall Street. At the Corner of Barton Street the procession will turn around and head East towards the corner of Lewis and Marshall Streets.
Joining in the free fun will be car clubs from across regional NSW, local businesses with themed window displays, and market stallholders with a selection of vintage and retro items, antiques and collectables. Suitable for all the family, including pets, put on your best retro day outfit, grab a coffee, do a spot of shopping, and simply soak up the Grey Mardi Gras atmosphere in the friendliest town in the Outback.
